Fiberglass doors are quickly becoming the doors of choice for many homeowners and designers. Nothing can match the look and feel of a real wood door, but the cost and maintenance of wood is making fiberglass a better solution for some.

Fiberglass doors come in two basic formats: smooth or woodgrained.  Unlike their steel predecessors, fiberglass doors have very realistic details. The panels are often made from molds of actual wood doors.  The smooth door is intended to be painted, either by the factory or by the end user. The woodgrain doors are meant to be stained, but look great painted too. Fiberglass is more resistant to dents, is warmer to the touch, and looks better than steel.

Every fiberglass door we quote is custom made to meet your needs. We can help you choose the right glass, door panel, and lock for your dream door. The right door is important, but it must be installed properly  if it is to look good and last. The installation is an often overlooked aspect of window and door sales, but it is the key to long product life.

The photo above shows a close up of a smooth fiberglass door. Notice the detail in the raised panels. This door is a flush-glazed model. There is no raised vinyl glass surround giving this the look a real wood door.

This planked fiberglass door has a mahogany wood grain. The frame is actual mahogany. They are both stained with a walnut finish. The door lite with sand blasted glass has internal wrought iron.

This house full of windows was the setting for what popular 90′s film?

Over the years we've had the privilege of being part of several television programs. One of our favourites is W Network's Love it or List It. We have installed windows for about  a dozen episodes, but this particular one is my favourite.

Luc and Lieve De Nil, originally from Belgium, were tired of the narrow main floor hallway and cramped quarters of their Roncesvalles home. Hilary Farr and the team at Love It or List It came up with a design that would remove most of the partition walls and relocate the rear windows and doors for better access and style.

While Luc and Lieve wanted new windows and doors, they also wanted to preserve the original charm and feel. We chose metal clad wood windows and doors because of their warmth and ability to match other interior finishes and for their maintenance-free exterior. We reproduced the stained glass pattern from the original window.

In total, 7 windows and doors were replaced. The original kitchen had a single door and a single window. The new plan called for the door and window locations to be reversed and enlarged. The front window and dining room bay window also feature traditional locks and handles. The original kitchen door is now a beautiful 5-foot sliding French patio door.

The windows are metal clad wood double hungs with traditional hardware. The metal clad finish ensures that painting is a thing of the past.

There was a single door originally on the left hand side and a small window on the right. The Love It or List It team did an amazing job of rebricking the exterior. You would never know that this brickwork wasn't original.

What film featured these fabulously decorated windows?

I first met Sarah Richardson and Tommy Smythe in 2006 at the site of Sarah's House 1 in Toronto. It was late summer when I visited the house.

I thought I was simply going to measure up for new windows and doors, and be on my way. Instead, I was greeted by the film crew and wired up for sound. After signing the appropriate release forms, Sarah, Tommy and I discussed the windows styles, colours and hardware on film. Exciting!

The new windows arrived in December and we began putting them in.

Working on the set of a television shoot was unlike anything we had done before. There seemed to be twice the amount of tradespeople as normal (all trying to meet their deadlines) as well as film and technical people all busy and stepping over each other.
Several times each day all the saws, hammers, drills and sanders had to stop. There would be a call for "silence" and we would drop what we were doing and stand still. Sarah or Tommy would film a segment with a trade, or discuss the design ideas for a room, or choose paint colours. The filming could take 30 minutes, an hour or more and we would all stand by quietly and watch, or have a coffee until the word was given that we could resume.
We all loved working on the project and enjoy watching the programs.
